Two robbery suspects were shot by an employee at a cell phone store in the Jeffrey Manor neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

“I think concealed carry is a great opportunity for managers, workers, employees to protect themselves in these cases. And our employee did a great job to protect themselves and the other employee.”

— Neil Tadros, store manager

The T-Mobile store in the 2000-block of East 95th St. was left riddled with bullet holes. If not for the employee carrying a weapon with a concealed carry license, the manager of the store says he might be telling a different story.

“I think concealed carry is a great opportunity for managers, workers, employees to protect themselves in these cases. And our employee did a great job to protect themselves and the other employee,” said Neil Tadros, store manager.

On April 21, Carol Bowne from Berlin Township, NJ, applied for a license to own a handgun, which she wanted to protect herself from a former boyfriend against whom she had a restraining order.

On June 3—while still waiting for the state to give her permission to own a gun—Bowne’s former boyfriend, Michael Eitel, allegedly stabbed her to death in her own driveway.

According to the Courier-Post, after getting the restraining order, Bowne “installed security cameras and an alarm system to her home and began the months-long process of obtaining a handgun.” Bowne’s co-workers said, “She got a restraining order about a month ago, and right after that her car windows were broken.”

Baltimore update – Freddie Gray #policestate | Charles Carroll Society

If I were you, I would stay far, far away from Baltimore. If you are near Baltimore it is a great time to go and visit some family member far, far away. If you have no where to go, shelter in place.

What is the issue?  There was this American citizen and a drug-dealer who was apparently arrested many times on selling drugs that the State said were illegal.  Not sure what that he sold drugs the state said were illegal matters in this incident.  Freddie Gray was taken into custody by the Baltimore Police Department for possession of what police called a switchblade but what others call a legal pocket knife.  He appeared to be healthy when he was put into a police van.  Whilst being transported, Gray had experienced what was described by officers as a “medical emergency“; within an hour of his arrest, Gray had fallen into a coma and had been taken to a trauma center, where it was determined that he had suffered from a spinal injury. According to his family, Gray’s spine was “80% severed” at his neck, he had three fractured vertebrae, and his larynx was injured.  He latter died…

Waco: The Sacred and Profane | Sipsey Street Irregulars

Waco: Where the legislative initiative to disarm the government afterwards?

Waco: The Sacred and Profane.

I came out the little driveway on the side of the building and got onto the main driveway that ran along the front of the building.   As I turned the corner . . . one of the agents outside a tank started screaming at me to come over to him.   My left ankle was all blistered, the skin was rolling off my hands, and my face was burned down the right side of my neck where the mask had been.   I guess I took the mask off after I got out. It was kind of melting onto my face. . . .  He was cussing me out, telling me if I made a false move he was going to blow my so-and-so head off.   But he said: you’re gonna remember this day for the rest of your life. I thought: at least that is a true statement.

Leftovers from Afghanistan and Iraq Wars: 1,558 Amputations; 7,224 Severe Brain Injuries; 118,829 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders |AllGov

The American toll from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan can be contemplated in many different ways, thanks to the Congressional Research Service (CRS).

A new CRS report (pdf) has provided a human accounting not only of how many service personnel died in the two conflicts, but of the many kinds of serious, life-long injuries with which thousands returned home.

A total of 1,558 soldiers endured major limb amputations as a result of battlefield injuries. Major limb amputations include the loss of one or more limbs, the loss of one or more partial limbs, or the loss of one or more full or partial hand or foot, according to the CRS.

Considerably more military personnel suffered “severe or penetrating brain injuries”— 7,224. Another 23,319 men and women were diagnosed with “moderate” brain injuries.

When “mild” and “not classifiable” cases are factored in, nearly 288,000 total brain injury cases were reported among all military personnel deployed and not deployed.

Then there are the post-traumatic stress disorder cases. The military and the Department of Veterans Affairs are currently trying to help 118,829 individuals who made it back with this mental disorder.

The CRS report also provided a demographic breakdown of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan (so far).  The Iraq campaign resulted in 4,476 American deaths. Female personnel accounted for 110 of the fatalities; the rest were men. The vast majority of Iraq war deaths were Caucasian (3,697), followed by 444 blacks, 230 Hispanics, and 78 Asians.

In Afghanistan, there have been 2,299 military deaths as of January 6, of whom 49 were female. The ethnic composition is as follows: 1,953 whites, 188 blacks, 92 Hispanics, 63 Asians, and others.

Mayor Bloomberg Says Cops Should Go On Strike Until Americans Give Up Their Guns (one can hope) | Reason

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told CNN’s Piers Morgan last night that he doesn’t “understand why police officers across this country don’t stand up collectively and say we’re going to go on strike, we’re not going to protect you unless you, the public, through your legislature, do what’s required to keep us safe.”

We’ve been hearing a lot of that recently. Earlier this year, The New York Times reprinted a Department of Justice press release and slapped this lede on top of it: “As violent crime has decreased across the country, a disturbing trend has emerged: Rising numbers of police officers are being killed.”

Bloomberg and The New York Times are both wrong:

  • In 2008, ten times more civilians regular people were killed by cops than cops were killed by perps.
  • In 2011, 72 cops were shot and killed in the entire U.S.; in L.A. County alone, cops shot and killed 54 suspects the same year–22 percent of those people were unarmed.
  • As Scott Reeder reported at Reason this morning, “Farmers, ranchers, commercial fishermen, loggers, garbage collectors, truck drivers, construction workers, pilots, steel workers, roofers, and others are far more likely to face death on the jobs than police or firefighters, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.”
  • And as Choire Sicha wrote earlier this year, “2008 was the ten-year low for police officers being killed, and 2012 is, so far, year-to-date, down 49% from last year.”  Continue reading

…The gang in question is the Spokane Police Department, which even now refuses to acknowledge that Thompson – who was a nominee to become Chief at the time he murdered Zehm – ever did anything wrong when he clubbed, tased, and suffocated a terrified, innocent man who did nothing to provoke the attack, and who put up no violent resistance to the assault…

U.S. Seals Court Records Of Border Patrol’s Murder | Judicial Watch

” The Obama Administration has abruptly sealed court records containing alarming details of how Mexican drug smugglers murdered a U.S. Border patrol agent with a gun connected to a failed federal experiment that allowed firearms to be smuggled into Mexico.

This means information will now be kept from the public as well as the media. Could this be a cover-up on the part of the “most transparent” administration in history? After all, the rifle used to kill the federal agent Brian Terry last December in Arizona’s Peck Canyon was part of the now infamous Operation Fast and Furious. Conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ATF, the disastrous scheme allowed guns to be smuggled into Mexico so they could eventually be traced to drug cartels.

Instead, federal law enforcement officers lost track of more than 1,000 guns which have been used in numerous crimes. In Terry’s case, five illegal immigrants armed with at least two semi-automatic assault rifles were hunting for U.S. Border Patrol agents near a desert watering hole just north of the Arizona-Mexico border when a firefight erupted and Terry got hit.
