On September 9, 2016, the United States Department of Justice announced that Reynoldsburg Police Officer Shane M. Mauger, 42, of Columbus, Ohio, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 33 months in prison for using his position as a police officer to deprive people of their civil rights by falsifying search warrant affidavits and unlawfully seizing money and property during drug trafficking investigations.
An undercover officer, Tye Downard, was implicated in the case but committed suicide after he was arrested. A third officer connected to the case was suspended earlier this year.
Mauger agreed to plead guilty to one count of federal program theft, and conspiracy to deprive persons of their civil rights. Each count carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. In addition to the 33 month prison sentence, Federal Judge Marbley also ordered Mauger to remain under court supervision for 2 years after…

The committees would include community leaders, clergy members and mental health professionals whose goal would be to identify those who might support terrorist activities and stopping it before ideas turn into plans.This would be someone who’s expressed support for a terrorist group, either in a community meeting or online.The Record reported that some in the Muslim community in New Jersey are worried that this program will effectively turn community members into government informants.The FBI said this initiative is about heading off extremism before law enforcement gets involved. Lloyd Sean Chandler, 39, is charged with first-degree sexual assault and distributing, possessing or viewing matter depicting sexually explicit conduct involving a child. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment before Circuit Judge Robin Green on Monday. Chandler is free on a $50,000 bond. Chandler, who was arrested Feb. 23, is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor to whom he held a position of trust or authority over, according to court documents. Chandler also is accused of possessing multiple images of a nude child, according to court documents. Chandler was a sergeant with the special investigations unit at the Sheriff’s Office. Diahlo Grant, reportedly armed, was shot and killed by Franklin Township police at 1:30AM after they reportedly confronted him over outstanding warrants for violation of probation and failure to pay child support. Dialho Grant, of Somerset, was pursued by two Franklin Township police officers after an encounter on Somerset and Home Streets, officials said. The officers followed Grant across the town border into New Brunswick where an exchange of gunfire occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m., according to police. Grant was wounded in the exchange and one of the police officers involved provided cardio-pulmonary resuscitation while waiting for emergency medial personnel to arrive at the scene. TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — He had a gun, flashing lights on his car and claimed to be a cop, but real police in Bergen County said the man was a phony. The suspect allegedly pulled a woman over with blue flashing lights and had a gun on his hip.It happened last Saturday around 11 a.m. on River Road and Deerbord Street. The woman knew something just wasn’t right. Police said the lights were the first giveaway. A vehicle with only blue flashing lights is not an official police officer.
“He got out of his vehicle and approached her car, identified himself as a detective, and said that she was speeding,” said Teaneck police Detective Lt. Andrew McGurr… The quick-thinking woman took off, and police said she did the right thing.
“Our officers know what to do, that they are to identify themselves and if someone has a problem with that they will request a marked unit to respond to the location,” McGurr said.
NEWARK, N.J. … two people have been fatally shot in Newark. It happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Clinton Place. Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose blames the deaths on “the availability of too many guns.” He called the slayings of the two people, identified only as one male and one female, as “senseless” and “tragic.”
No arrests had been made in the early hours of the investigation, which is still active and ongoing. Authorities said more information will be released as it becomes available.

Coram (Long Island) N.Y. — Suffolk County Police uncovered a large drug operation allegedly run by father and son. Police found 730 grams of cocaine, 318 grams of heroin, 36 grams of oxycodone and $200,000 in cash at the Fearon’s home at 1902 Avalon Pines Drive in Coram. Joseph Fearon, 40, lives there. He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of drug paraphernalia. His son, Jasheme, 23, lives in Middle Island. Two concealed weapons holders, who were victims of an armed robbery at a Columbia barbershop, shot and killed one of the suspects on Friday night.
Colombia Police Department responded to an armed robbery call at ‘Next Up Barber and Beauty’ in the 4400 block of Fort Jackson Blvd shortly before 7 p.m. Several people, including children, were inside the business when two armed men wearing masks demanded and stole money from them. John Marion, a former police officer in Waldwick Borough, N.J., was sentenced today for stealing more than $321,000 by fraudulently collecting a disability pension from the State of New Jersey while working full-time as an officer in Georgia.
John Robert Marion, 44, of Valdosta, Georgia, was sentenced to 364 days in the county jail as a condition of four years of probation by Superior Court Judge Peter E. Warshaw in Mercer County. He was immediately taken into custody to begin serving his jail term. Marion pleaded guilty on Nov. 12 to a charge of third-degree theft by deception. He must pay full restitution of $321,008 and is permanently barred from public employment in New Jersey. He turned over a check for $100,000 in court today toward that restitution… The investigation began with a referral from the Pension Fraud & Abuse Unit in the New Jersey Division of Pensions.
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — A former police officer who held a gun to a man’s head over alleged illegal parking was sentenced to five years in prison Friday. Officer Santiago was convicted by a judge of two counts of assault, a handgun offense and misconduct in office.Last month, Prince George’s County Police released cellphone video of the incident showing Santiago holding a gun to a man’s head and ordering him to get back inside a car.
Prosecutors say Santiago had accused the man of parking illegally when he had not.No one was injured in the May 2014 incident in Bowie, a Maryland suburb of Washington. Prosecutors say William Cunningham was in a car with his cousin when Santiago repeatedly asked the men what they were doing and insisted that they were illegally parked, which prosecutors said was not true. The cellphone video shows Santiago holding a gun to a man’s head and ordering him to get back inside a car… Santiago did not speak at his hearing. What is the issue? There was this American citizen and a drug-dealer who was apparently arrested many times on selling drugs that the State said were illegal. Not sure what that he sold drugs the state said were illegal matters in this incident. Freddie Gray was taken into custody by the Baltimore Police Department for possession of what police called a switchblade but what others call a legal pocket knife. He appeared to be healthy when he was put into a police van. Whilst being transported, Gray had experienced what was described by officers as a “medical emergency“; within an hour of his arrest, Gray had fallen into a coma and had been taken to a trauma center, where it was determined that he had suffered from a spinal injury. According to his family, Gray’s spine was “80% severed” at his neck, he had three fractured vertebrae, and his larynx was injured. He latter died…

PMC Associates, a New Jersey-based company specializing in mission-critical radio solutions for first responders, is teaming up with Oceus Networks and Fujitsu Network Communications to build the proof-of-concept network, known as JerseyNet.
PMC Associates is providing integration and support services, while Oceus Networks is supplying the LTE core and the radio access network (RAN). Fujitsu is designing, equipping and managing the wireless and wireline backhaul portions of the network.
Bryan Casciano, vice president of sales for PMC Associates, told IWCE’s Urgent Communications that JerseyNet is designed to include more than 30 cells on wheels (COWs) and six systems on wheels (SOWs) that can be deployed in various locations via SUVs, vans or trailers.
Under the terms of its Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) funding, the JerseyNet deployment must be completed by September, a requirement that is expected to be met under the current schedule. “We want to have all of this installed by June,” Casciano told the publication….

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A rookie Cleveland police officer shot a 12-year-old boy outside a city recreation center late Saturday afternoon after the boy pulled a BB gun from his waistband, police said.
Police were responding to reports of a male with a gun outside Cudell Recreation Center at Detroit Avenue and West Boulevard about 3:30 p.m., Deputy Chief of Field Operations Ed Tomba said.
A rookie officer and a 10-15 year veteran pulled into the parking lot and saw a few people sitting underneath a pavilion next to the center. The rookie officer saw a black gun sitting on the table, and he saw the boy pick up the gun and put it in his waistband, Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Jeffrey Follmer said.
The officer got out of the car and told the boy to put his hands up. The boy reached into his waistband, pulled out the gun and the rookie officer fired two shots, Tomba said.
Tomba said the child did not threaten the officer verbally or physically…. cleveland.com.
” A new car device called “Target Blu Eye,” developed and sold by the Dutch company Target Automotive, advertises the ability to warn drivers of nearby police officers, and cops are upset about this.
The device is marketed as a way to warn drivers of nearby emergency vehicles which have not turned on their emergency lights or sirens, signalling their proximity to the driver.
Blu Eye works by monitoring frequencies used by various emergency vehicles, including ambulances, firetrucks, and police cars, and then alerts the driver to the presence of such vehicles. According to the Free Thought Project, the monitor also works when radars and other equipment used by police even when the equipment is turned off. Even a turned off police radio on a foot-patrol is reportedly detected by the device.
In New York, former state trooper Brian Beardsley is now clear of any criminal charges following the announced yesterday of Hamilton County District Attorney James Curry that the grand jury had dismissed an earlier felony charge. Beardsley was charged after he ran over Chad Finch, 20, (left) who had fallen in the road. Beardsley, who was returning from a party with this girlfriend, pulled over briefly and she called police. However, they then left the scene and returned home.
Kind of an odd name for a cop, he might want to look into having it legally changed. It’s hard to feel too sorry for the press, though. After all they are getting what they have been cheer leading for for a long time. Disarmed citizens, and only the police having guns. Two very important cases related to the 4th Amendment protection of cellphone data went before the Supreme Court yesterday. At issue here is whether or not police can search someone’s cellphone upon arrest. As usual, the Obama administration’s Justice Department is arguing against the citizenry, and in favor of the (police) state. Let’s not forget that the “Justice” Department also argued in favor of the police being able to place GPS tracking devices on people’s cars without a warrant back in 2011. Fortunately, the Supreme Court ruled against it.
Naturally, the feds in the current case will discuss all of the criminals they were able to bring to justice as a result of these privacy violations, but they will certainly not point out America’s current epidemic of unlawful arrests, as well as arrests for petty non-violent crimes that happen each and every day. We have often suggested that, if we wish to know what is coming politically, socially, and economically in jurisdictions such as the EU and US, we might have a look at countries like Argentina and Venezuela, as they are in a similar state of near-collapse (for the very same reasons as the EU and US) but are a bit further along in the historical pattern.
Such a bellwether was seen in Argentina recently. Although the event in question is a very minor one, it is an illustration of the social tipping point—the manner in which a government loses control over its people.
Briefly, the events were as follows: Two men on a motorbike cruised a posh neighbourhood in Buenos Aires, seeking opportunities for purse-snatching. The pillion rider dismounted and snatched a purse from a woman. Bystanders saw the act, ran down the thief before he could re-mount the motorbike, and knocked him to the ground. Other onlookers (very possibly fed up with street crime caused by economic hardships) joined in. In a fury, they beat the thief senseless.
A policewoman managed to calm the group and handcuff the thief. Twenty minutes later, police assistance and an ambulance arrived.
Furious neighbours complained bitterly that the police had protected the thief but are generally doing little to protect law-abiding citizens. Continue reading →

I came out the little driveway on the side of the building and got onto the main driveway that ran along the front of the building. As I turned the corner . . . one of the agents outside a tank started screaming at me to come over to him. My left ankle was all blistered, the skin was rolling off my hands, and my face was burned down the right side of my neck where the mask had been. I guess I took the mask off after I got out. It was kind of melting onto my face. . . . He was cussing me out, telling me if I made a false move he was going to blow my so-and-so head off. But he said: you’re gonna remember this day for the rest of your life. I thought: at least that is a true statement.
” A number of East Williamsburg and Bushwick residents were surprised by a combined federal and NYPD raid on Devoe Street early Sunday morning. Some were disturbed by a loud, low-flying helicopter, while others were simply stopped from going home because the street was blocked off.
Witnesses spotted a big Department of Homeland Security truck as well as DHS agents toting machine guns as they raided 221 Devoe Street. The NYPD was also involved, and one officer told a resident that the bust turned up “kilos of heroin.” (Apparently the drugs may have been from out of the country, hence DHS.)

The Baltimore Police Department has instituted a new policy that prohibits officers from stopping people from taping or photographing police actions, the agency said Wednesday.
The new rules were unveiled as the city agreed to pay $250,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a man who says police seized his cellphone and deleted the video of an arrest at the Preakness Stakes in 2010.

…Politicians in Connecticut have grossly overplayed their hand with the state’s so-called “assault weapon” ban and registration act. Being politicians, they seem to feel they are above consequence for their actions, and so it seems as if they will push ahead with plans to attempt to bring the owners of more than 350,000 “undocumented” firearms and nearly 2 million standard capacity magazines to heal. There are but 1,120 sworn officers in the Connecticut State Police as of last week. Area mental health professionals say they’re concerned about an aspect of the state’s new gun law requiring them to report potentially dangerous patients.
The New York State SAFE Act includes a section designed to “…remove firearms from those who seek to do harm to themselves or others.” The law requires reporting by doctors, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers and registered nurses to advise authorities.
Since that provision of the law took effect March 16, officials have received at least 30 reports of people whose gun licenses should be reviewed, state police say. Continue reading →
State Assemblyman Ray Walter says when he saw the news coverage of David Lewis’ case, he knew immediately something was “seriously wrong.” Walter wants some answers, when he meets face-to-face with the State Police Superintendent in Albany next Tuesday.
…Lewis was forced to turn in his seven handguns and stripped of his pistol permit. After State Police in Albany identified him – instead of a different David Lewis in another county – as being too mentally ill to own them…
“What’s supposed to happen, according to the NY SAFE Act, is this: When a mental health professional deems someone a threat to himself or others, she reports that to her supervisor.
Definition of ‘mental health professional’ ?

The supervisor notifies the county health commissioner, who sends only non-clinical information – such as the person’s name, date of birth, and Social Security number – to State Police and the Division of Criminal Justice Services.
They are supposed to check that information against their records. If the person has a gun permit, police get back in touch with the county.

Public policy is a lot like math: No matter what the problem, the wrong answers are far more numerous than the right ones. This is particularly true on the subject of mass shootings and other firearms violence, which have stimulated a new fervor for barking up the wrong tree.
Many liberals think the answer to mass shootings and street crime lies in stricter gun regulation: banning “assault weapons,” limiting the capacity of magazines or, in their unrestrained moments, adopting ultra-stringent laws like those in Britain or Australia.
But most of these ideas are irrelevant or impossible. Even if the Second Amendment didn’t prevent it, Americans would never stand for a near-total ban on ownership of semiautomatic weapons, a la Australia, or of handguns, as in Britain. The crux of avoiding a consensual encounter is noncooperation—refusal to answer questions and to consent to police requests. As noted above, this requires a fair degree of self-confidence and a willingness to flout the conventions of common discourse which, of course, this is not. Nevertheless, it is the sine qua non of consensual encounter avoidance. “Can we see your driver’s license?” “No!” “What are you doing here?” “I am not answering,” or less politely, “None of your business.”
Saying “no” once may not be enough. Some courts have held that continued badgering after a first refusal causes the encounter to cross the line to a seizure, but others have permitted repeated questioning and requests for consent to search without concluding that a seizure had taken place. A reasonable person would thus be well-advised to say “no” repeatedly, and to reject any attempt by the officer to accompany her if she tries to leave. Some courts have found it significant that the refusals were delivered in a shout or scream, or that the individual ran from police in an attempt to get away. The cases thus not only encourage flatly rebuffing the officer’s inquiries, but also encourage doing so in the rudest, most confrontational, and most obnoxious manner.

This report was released by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, more specifically from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research that NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg funded to the tune of $107,000,000 around 2001 (see here and here). NEWARK, N.J. … two people have been fatally shot in Newark. It happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Clinton Place. Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose blames the deaths on “the availability of too many guns.” He called the slayings of the two people, identified only as one male and one female, as “senseless” and “tragic.”

Two very important cases related to the 4th Amendment protection of cellphone data went before the Supreme Court yesterday. At issue here is whether or not police can search someone’s cellphone upon arrest. As usual, the Obama administration’s Justice Department is arguing against the citizenry, and in favor of the (police) state. Let’s not forget that the “Justice” Department also argued in favor of the police being able to place GPS tracking devices on people’s cars without a warrant back in 2011. Fortunately, the Supreme Court ruled against it.
